MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows Merritt (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran on a mission in Afghanistan who is at odds with her family over the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend from the military. Despite the persistence of her VA counselor (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the ease of an unexpected love interest, Merritt’s dysfunctional and intimate friendship with Zoe keeps the duo from isolating themselves from the world. That is, until Merritt’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), holed up in the family’s ancestral lake house, begins to get lost and needs the one thing he refuses to give up… help. At its core, this is a buddy movie about complicated friendships, broken families, and the complicated ways we process grief.
